I've hijacked some earth cultures for this: Counting Coup comes straight from my grade 7 history lessons about the Plains Indians; I discovered the Kurdish term "Peshmerga" for warriors who look death in the eye when I was happily doing writing research. I liked both concepts and have shamelessly used them for my nefarious purposes.
