Would it be possible to sign up for both roles (artist and author), obviously not picking your own piece of art to do the fic portion?

That should be fine, as long as you're quite sure that you can finish both parts.

I think there's enough time between the two, that finishing both parts won't be too terrible an issue (granted, I don't go crazy making art.)
