This is the part that had me convinced that, at the very least, John was on the ship. During my first read through it looked to me like Coolidge's look of surprise meant he indeed had a mathematician with him and for a moment was wondering how Rodney knew he had John with him. Admittedly, now that I reread it, I don't so much see it, but there you go.
